A lot of my clients derive a sense of safety from their belongings. They worry about what will happen to them if they don’t have all their stuff. While the origins of this fear can be wide and varied, and this post isn’t so much about why we crave security, but other ways to find it if you need to declutter but find it hard.
There are many ways to gain a sense of security without owning lots of stuff. By cultivating them, you might find that you build a solid base to support you when trying to reduce your possessions.
Here are some ideas:
- Build strong relationships: Having strong relationships with family, friends, and loved ones can provide a sense of security and comfort. Knowing that you have people you can rely on in times of need can be invaluable.
- Develop skills: By developing skills and knowledge in areas that are important to you, you can increase your confidence and feel more secure in your abilities. For example, learning how to cook, garden, or repair things around the house can help you feel more self-sufficient.
- Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally can help you feel more secure in yourself. This could include things like exercise, meditation, therapy, or spending time in nature.
- Save money: While owning lots of stuff isn’t necessary for security, having some financial stability can be helpful. Building up an emergency fund or saving for long-term goals can provide peace of mind.
- Cultivate a sense of gratitude: Focusing on what you have rather than what you don’t have can help you feel more content and secure. Practicing gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal or actively appreciating your belongings and those around you can help shift your mindset towards abundance and the sense that you’ll always be okay.
Overall, security is about feeling safe and supported, and there are many ways to cultivate that feeling without relying on material possessions.
